Roach Gigz And Lil 4 Tay "From Another" EP

Another free mixtape has dropped from the straight-out-of-the-Bay Area (San Francisco to be specific) rappers Roach Gigz and Lil 4-Tay, who together form the group Bitch I Go (B.I.G.). The duo stepped on to the Northern California music scene in 2006 with their street smash “I Get It.” The single was the first song they ever recorded together and it ended up getting spins on the two biggest hip-hop radio stations in the Bay Area, 106 KMEL and WILD 949. Roach and 4 continued to record song after song with no backing or musical outlet, and without any kind of formal release. Although it seemed as though every young person from San Francisco to Stockton already had most of the group's songs playing on their iPods, car stereos, and phone ring tones, when a collection of the group's recordings was issued on a 2008 Internet-only, Mistah Fab-hosted mixtape, it was downloaded thousands of times. This leads to… Their latest release, “From Another”. The EP dropped on 2/23/2010 at midnight, exclusively online, and again free for fans to download. “From Another” is their first formal CD, and consists of music mostly recorded in 2007 and early 2008, but held out from public ears for an official album that never came. DaVinci is a rapper from San Francisco's Fillmore District who came up under Bay Area legend San Quinn, who's also from the Fillmore. He recently released an album titled "The Day The Turf Stood Still". The best song I've heard from DaVinci so far is "What You Finna Do", where DaVinci vividly describes the changes in his once-thriving culturally rich neighborhood as it undergoes urban renewal and gentrification. DaVinci describes the new Fillmore down to a T, and added a strong visual to support his lyrics. I haven't seen anybody musically touch this issue so well. Shout out to DaVinci.

After a producer creates an original sound with one artist and that artists record becomes a smash hit, said producer gets a mailbox full of offers from pop acts trying to recreate that sound and feeling. Good thing for producer Diplo (whose soundscape made M.I.A. a household name in 2008) that he didn't sell out and take those "big money, bad idea" offers that i'm sure were on the table. Instead Diplo connected with Swedish singer/songwriter Robyn to make her leading single No Hassle. This song shows Diplo's versatility as a producer who can hook any artist up right and still stay true to the Diplo brand of slap.

It's hard to except that North Carolina duo Little Brother (Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh)will be releasing their last album with Left Back. Listening to this track from the album reminds me just how much LB has given to rap music. They remembered to write about all the aspects of life. Not rapping about dope, guns, the club, and most importantly not rapping about rap on some "super hip hop" geek shit.

Headhuntin', BBQ, Remixes & Town Business

When I made this remix to Little Dragon's Blinking Pigs, i had no idea just how much of Oakland was in the music. Luckily for me and the Honor Roll there's a Whiz Kid able to easily connect the dots. I grabbed this article from honorrollcrew.com.

Last month 1-O.A.K.'s remix of Little Dragon's "Blinking Pigs" was selected by the group themselves as the winner of Filter Magazine's remix contest. But when I thought about it, the irony of the remix being named "God Made Me Funky" could have been obvious to most crate diggers who might have instantly recognized the break, but there is a deeper irony.

The reason being is that "God Made Me Funky" was originally recorded by Herbie Hancock's Headhunters as the music for a radio commercial for famed Oakland BBQ joint Everett & Jones. The legend has it that once the commercial started airing people liked it so much they began to request it thinking it was a song instead of a commercial. And as with 1-O.A.K.'s remix, it's the deep funk of the drums that makes the song go. Those are the drums of Oakland's own and Headhunters' drummer Mike Clark, who confirms this story in his interview in the Wax Poetics Issue #28. Town Business indeed!
