It's known Prince is my favorite artist of all time. In celebration of his 52nd Birthday(June 7th) I'm busting out some of my favorite classic Joints from the Purple One himself. Singles, album cuts, b-sides and a few extras like the Prince written "Manic Monday" for The Bangles and Chaka Kahn's cover of Prince's "I Feel For You". Enjoy!
Here is Vol. 3 in this series of some, just some of my favorite Underground Classics from the mid to late 90's/early 200's. Again this mix is full of some classic joints you hopefully remember. If not take notes and enjoy!!!
Here is part two of my Underground Classics series, done this time around all with vinyl. There's some serious underground jems in here. Cuts to peep are Supherb's joint with Chino XL, which really pokes fun at the time when people were hella caught up with the "East Coast/West Coast bullshit. The Colored Section's "Bomb MC" is a funny grimey joint full of good punch lines. O.C.'s Half Good Half Sinner is a real gem, especially since it never made the album it was supposed to be on due to sample clearence issues. And please listen close to the Cash Money Click joint. It's not the Cash Money from the south. This "CMC" was a group outta NYC on Blunt Recordings featuring a then unknown Ja Rule. He's on the 12" cover on the left of the pic. Irv Gotti was behind the beats and it sounds like some classic underground NYC shit. Enjoy!
In celebration of the release of Gotan Project's 3rd studio album "Tango 3.0" I decided to drop a set of Electronic Tango joints. Sure it's a total 180 from my last two shows but, I love this style of music. Enjoy!
This mix goes out to my boy Gooch, the biggest DJ Quik fan I know. I've been a fan since day one myself, so here is a little mix of some of my favorite DJ Quik joints from over the years. Also featured is music from the Blakout album, Mausberg & that classic Tony Toni Tone Collabo! Enjoy!
Here folks is a tribute mix to one of the hardest to ever bless the mic. MC Ren is not for the easily offended. Dude might be the most unapologetic Emcee EVER. That's one of the reasons why he's one of my all time favorites. I've been a fan since the first time I heard him with N.W.A. and remained a fan when he went solo. Emcees don't rap like this anymore, many might just be too afraid to rap like this. Enjoy LISTEN:
Here is part two of my International Woman's Month mix. Again it features a collection of voices true and dear to my heart. This is BEST OF in any order, just some of my favorites. Enjoy!
Here is part one of a 2 part mix of some of my favorite female voices mixed together for International Woman's Month. There's a lot of heavy hitters & not so well known and under-appreciated singers/rhymers. Enjoy!
Music producer Khayree has been putting it down successfully and independently since the 80's and has helped put Vallejo on the map launching the careers of such emcees as The Mac (R.I.P.), Ray Luv, Mac Mall, Dubee and Bay Area icon Mac Dre (R.I.P.). Check his discography and you'd be surprised to see that even Vanilla Ice needed a Khayree beat back in the day. His production style is soulful, bluesy and mobbin'. In a time where samples were the standard, he raised the bar by hardly ever using samples. If you're not up on the early Mac Dre stuff too, this mix shows how ahead of his time he was. Khayree is without a doubt a musical genius, who is way slept on. For those not up on this Bay Area legend, you need to soak up some game. Enjoy!
This week I pay tribute to a Bay Area Legend & one of the best producers not only in the Bay but in Hip-Hop, Ant Banks. For a number of year Ant Banks sound defined what Hip-Hop in Oakland was. His sound was unmistakable. To The Bay, Ant Banks was our Dr. Dre. Be on the look out as he has a new record in the working, but for now check out these classics I've mixed together. Enjoy! Last year I did a mix tape of the work of super producer Salaam Remi. Salaam is a beast with the beats and for my money might be the most underrated producer in Hip-Hop ever. His catalog is massive. This 2 hour 7 min mix is still a small drop in the bucket of what this man has done. Enjoy!
Here folks is a little mix of some of my favorite Pete Rock produced joints! On here you'll get your fill of Pete Rock & CL Smooth, some classic Pete Rock Remixes and productions. He might be the best who ever did it on the SP-1200 and without a doubt one of the greatest Hip-Hop producers of all time. Enjoy!
So if you're a DJ Quik fan, chances are you're a fan of his crew. They went by the 304 posse, 304 of course if you had a pager back then knew what it meant(if not look at 304 upside down). 2nd II None, Hi-C, AMG & Penthouse Player's Clique put out some incredible debut albums. Their follow up work was good but I always felt their first albums were just superior. But today you'll get a mix of my favorite cuts from Quik's crew. Enjoy!
